In my last blog, I have written the dog’s training, dog’s diet and dog’s disease. And some of my readers said that they are not so detailed and they suggested me to talked about one topic a time. Therefore, in this blog, I will discuss whether the pet dog should be euthanized. Nowadays, many people are willing to spend a lot of money and time on their pets because pets can always bring people lots of happiness and people are paying more attention on their pets. And there is a doubt question arise: Is it ethical to let the pets be euthanized?
Some people think the euthanasia is an ethical decision, according to the article called “When is it ethical to euthanize your pet?” It talks about the process of people were beginning to accept animal euthanasia. In1979, there is a case that the dog owner are grief when their pet dog died, after than, the people initiated others to spend much money on animal treatments. The writer also give some suggestions to help people make decisions of their pets. He asked us to think from an animal perspective: does the animal get excited about receiving a treat? I totally agree with the statement of the writer. No life wants painful treatment. Instead of leaving them alive and suffering, it is better to let them leave peacefully. After reading my blog, if you are the pet owner, do you have concerned this question, and do you have answer in your hart?
In the other hand, someone think it is unethical to let their pet euthanize. They thought humans deprive the right of pets to live. There is a blog said that: If euthanasia is justified at all, it is justified only if we have the patient’s competent consent. What’s more, he said the pet dogs are incapable of giving competent consent; so if euthanasia is justified at all, it is definitely not justified in the case of pets. However, I disagree with the author’s view. First, dogs don’t speak human language, they can’t communicate with people. And it is impossible to let the dogs make decisions themselves. Second, the pet dog has always been regarded as the owner’s property after the owner have bought them. The host can make decision for their pets. Therefore, whether it wants to be euthanized can be left to the owner to decide. In a word, euthanasia cannot be defined as immoral although it is cruel.
Different people may have different views of euthanasia, and they all have their own reasons, but the goal of them are the same, which is they do not want their pets to regret when the dogs are dying.
